Score Review
Padding (92/100)
The Fly Super Lace Lightning gloves utilize a multi-layer foam padding that Fly claims is “high-density”. In my opinion, the padding is definitely on the softer side, yet still striking a decent balance between protection and feedback from the first month that I’ve had these. However, when comparing these to the Winning MS-600s, I undoubtedly believe that the Fly’s padding will lose some integrity and become soft and too thin for my knuckles. Nonetheless, while I’ve had these for the last month and have been landing punches, the foam has cushioned the knuckles very, very well, yet the feedback from the punch is still there. This makes it a versatile glove suitable for sparring and heavy bag use.
Glove Fit (95/100)
Sliding your hand into the glove, you’re immediately met with a snug fit. The deep finger compartment ensures that your fingers are comfortably tucked in. The thumb position is roomy, preventing any jamming issues. However, the palm opening might be a bit tight for those with thicker hands, especially when wearing hand wraps. These 16-ounce lace-up gloves are designed to mold to the hand, offering a snug fit. The long thumb design, combined with the soft grip bar, ensures that the hand sits naturally and comfortably, allowing for optimal fist formation. The ability to fully open the hand in these gloves means catching shots becomes easier, making them a favorite among many boxers.
Inner-Lining Comfort (96/100)
The glove boasts a silky polyester nylon liner. This liner feels smooth against the skin, preventing any irritation during prolonged use (and no irritation when breaking in the gloves). There’s no excess liner bunching up, ensuring a consistent and comfortable fit throughout. Fly has gone above and beyond with the luxurious lining of the Superlace gloves.
Exterior Material (97/100)
Crafted from 100% genuine Scottish leather, the gloves exude a premium feel. The leather has a unique satin finish, reminiscent of high-end Italian handbags. It’s supple, durable, and even has a distinct odor, different from the typical leather smell. Crafted from leather sourced from a Scottish tannery, which also supplies leather for luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the exterior material is both durable and aesthetically pleasing. This leather ensures longevity and gives the gloves a premium look and feel.
Stitching Quality (96/100)
The stitching on these gloves is flawless. Whether it’s the intricate lightning bolt design or the areas where different colored leathers meet, the craftsmanship shines through. The stitching not only adds to the glove’s aesthetics but also its durability. Unlike many gloves that use unnecessary stitching that ultimately leads to shorter glove longevity (stitching almost certainly comes apart for cheaper gloves that overuse stitching), the Fly Superlace gloves are stitched, quite frankly, immaculately. The attention to detail is evident in the cross-stitching on the wrist area and unique double stitching near the cuff, ensuring that the gloves remain intact even after rigorous use. This level of craftsmanship ensures that the gloves will last for at least a couple of years.
Wrist Support (91/100)
The wrist support is commendable. With about an inch of medium to soft-density foam on the back of the wrist and half an inch on the inside, the glove provides ample support. The cross-stitching design not only adds to the aesthetics but also ensures that the laces remain in place. Finally, although not directly related to the wrist, the long, flat round laces ensure a secure fit, further enhancing wrist protection. I think that the wrist protection on these gloves are similar to Winning’s—especially given the similarity in padding composition.
Sparring Suitability (92/100)
The glove’s foam composition makes the Superlace Lightning edition perfect for sparring. It offers a good balance of protection for both the wearer and the sparring partner. I have to interject here and just say that yes, the balance between protection and support is good, but it not as good as in Winning gloves. The reason being is that the padding on the Superlace lightning model is softer than on the Winning MS-600s. The softness may lead to most wearers with chronic hand injuries resorting to knuckle guards or taping their hands (NOTE, if you are a pro boxer who tapes his/her hands for every season these gloves are perfect for you). One last thing to point out, the flat punch surface of the Superlace model does a great job at making sure punches land effectively without causing injuries (a good feature attributable to the long finger compartment.
Heavy-Bag Suitability (89/100)
For those looking to put in work on the heavy bag, these gloves won’t disappoint. The foam provides enough cushioning to protect the hands while still allowing for solid feedback with every punch.
Fly Superlace Lightning Gloves Overview
Priced at $415, these gloves are undoubtedly on the higher end of the spectrum. However, considering the craftsmanship, material quality, and overall performance, they offer value for those willing to invest in top-tier equipment. Given the price point however, I am disappointed at the quality control for these gloves in terms of weight. The weight discrepancy on these gloves based on numerous previous is jarring. For example, CSquared’s review of the 12 oz Fly Lightnings weighted in at 13.7 oz! While both gloves are symmetrical in weight, they are almost two ounces overweight. Disregarding the weight discrepancy, the Fly Super Lace Lightning boxing gloves are a testament to quality craftsmanship and design. They perform exceptionally well in both sparring and heavy bag sessions. The comfort, protection, and feedback they offer are top-notch. With their increasing popularity among top professionals and their rigorous testing by world champions, these gloves are a worthy investment for any serious boxer. They truly are the Aston Martins of the boxing glove world. Check them out and experience the difference for yourself.
